Who am I?
Good question!
My name is Tanja (pronounced Tanya), I’m a 32 year old Swiss woman who moved to the UK at the end of 2019 (yep, just before everything went crazy – talk about timing).
My love for dogs goes way back – I’ve been obsessed with them ever since I can remember and always dreamed of having one. When I was 15, me and my younger brother finally convinced our parents to get one (and we ended up with not one but two lovely Cavalier King Charles Spaniels).
Fast forward almost 20 years, now in the UK and looking for work, I just so happened to get hired by a dog food company who offers tailored kibble subscriptions. I was working in their German speaking customer support team, assisting owners in finding the best solution for their dog, discussing health issues, and educating them on care and nutrition. The hectic life of customer support ended up not being for me, but I did learn that I absolutely adore helping people improve their lives and – dare I say, even more importantly – those of their dog(s).
After choosing to leave the world of virtual customer support behind me, I decided to take some time off and to invest in my dream job – dog trainer and, eventually, behaviourist. My ultimate goal is to be equipped to help dogs who are deemed “hopeless” (due to reactivity, anxiety, or other reasons) to give them another chance at living the good boy / girl life they so deserve.
I’m currently enrolled in the Dog Trainer Certification Programme at Dog Training College. It’s a comprehensive self-paced online programme, which I supplement with practical experience while out walking dogs (with owner consent) or with my housemates’ 12 year old Boston Terrier Barry (whose hearing has got a bit selective over the years but he’s a good boy).
Dogs are my favourite thing in the world, and I know and understand how important they are to their families. This is why I always go the extra mile to make sure all dogs in my care have the best time and get the most out of every minute they spend with me.
I use positive reinforcement for both training and walking and always make sure that I understand each dog’s learning style and personality before working with them. Like us, each dog is unique, so each dog needs their own tailored approach to set them up for success.
I am of course still learning, so having access to dogs whose owners are happy to let me practice with them is essential. If you have a dog who’s generally well behaved (no behavioural issues) but could use some minor training (e.g. loose lead walking, basic obedience, or tricks) and you’re happy for me to train them for free or at very low cost (depending on time per session), please do get in touch!
